When one becomes a sister, a seed is planted in the depths of both of their hearts. In order to grow, the seed requires the warmth of the other’s love, a dousing of compliments, and a breath of encouragement. After some time, the seed blooms into a beautiful flower and gains the gazes of many. It is the job of the other sister to protect her flower, so that it never gets picked. I am a sister. The day I became one, was the first day I left the house without a doll in tow. â€Å"I’m gonna have a new doll now, right Gramma?† Grandma smiled as she buckled me in. â€Å"Right, but this one you’ll have to take extra good care of,† she responded with a wink. An Essay on Criticism Alexander Pope engraved his name in history by proving that the pen is mightier than the sword. Due to him being a Roman Catholic, he was unable to attend University, vote, or hold office. To add on to that, Pope was plagued with poor health from birth, suffering from tuberculosis of the bone. At the age of 23, Pope wrote his first striking poetic piece, An Essay on Criticism. Intrigued by his essay, I wondered if what he had to say might hold true today, and whether Pope’s words could/should play a part in how we judge things today. Pope’s An Essay on Man is divided up into three parts. Of those three parts, two are in our textbook. Of those two parts, one is dedicated to describing how critic’s criticism can be unjustified and harmful to the creator. The second part describes the birth of poor Judgment, naming pride and, from what I can tell, ignorance as the culprit parents of a poor critic. In Pope’s time, the most commonly Judged works were iterate. Poems, plays, novels, and other readable sources were the mainstream source of entertainment back then. Today, we have a different type of visual media; we watch as oppose to read. TV shows, movies, and Internet videos are our main source of visual entertainment in these times. Music is also another large source of entertainment and probably an even bigger platform for Judgment and criticism if you consider all the different genres and people’s large variety of taste in music. In Lines 17-18, Pope says, â€Å"Authors are partial to their wit, ‘its true, /But are not critics to heir Judgment too? I took this to mean that while authors may not always be putting out gold or writing the next groundbreaking piece, critics aren’t always the ones to say what the next groundbreaking piece is, or whether it is even good or not. Critics can have biased opinions by human nature and will not like some things no matter how good they are in their own respects. In Lines 21-22 P ope says, â€Å"Nature affords at least a glimmering light,† meaning the author has some internal sense of direction with what they’re doing. â€Å"The lines, though but touched faintly, are drawn right. I felt eke this meant that through informal skill and some ignorance, the creator has still managed to put out something worthwhile. Even if it IS bad, it could show some serious signs of potential. To the creator, it may be the best work they’ve ever done, but if allowed to continue creating, they may look back and wonder what the Hell made them think that was okay to call finished. I can personally relate to this because I’m in a terrible little band and I can remember writing songs that we thought were amazing, awesome, and would rock socks right off the feet of my audiences, but years eater, we don’t even play those songs anymore. They are completely scrapped. We never really had any bad criticism, but along the way, we criticized ourselves decided to change direction. I’m not sure if I find criticism to be relevant today. Even back in Pope’s day, a bad critic usually Just found themselves satirized in one of Pope’s works. I think criticism is especially ineffective today because I think it used to be a tool people used to find what they should bother paying attention to, but now we have an almost unlimited source of entertainment outlets we can turn to that we’re bound to mind something we like. I think today criticism either hurts someone’s feelings or they’ll Just curse you out in there head. I think it is more harmful than effective. Shelley Viscous, a life skills specialist and mind coach, says, â€Å"Hindsight is a wonderful thing but it is that, information we realize after something has already happened. We can then use that information for next time but we cannot change or alter what has happened. So criticism Just rubs salt into the wounds,† (Viscous). I think this is true because my band never had anyone tell us what we were making as good or bad, we simply evolved after saw what we were doing wasn’t enough to make people interested in us. And we’re still evolving. Right now we’re writing songs we think are amazing, dJГ vi, and I’m sure we’ll once again look back and be borderline ashamed of what we’re writing. I think criticism, good or bad, can tend to negatively affect humans psychologically. I’d be willing to bet that if the rankings for the King of the Beasts were dependent on psychological strength and not our ability to create and dominate, Mankind would be near the bottom. Humans are a atheistically weak race when it comes to psychological strength. You don’t ever see any lions or tigers with social anxiety disorders or monkeys that are introverted or cry when they get called a loser. The dark realm humans throw themselves in when faced with criticism is called cognitive distortions. â€Å"These negative thinking styles are within psychology known as cognitive distortions. These inaccurate thoughts may seem rational and accurate but in reality they only serve to reinforce negative thinking or emotions, keeping us from feeling good about ourselves,† (Isakson). I’m not ring to act like I’m better than anyone. I know it sounds like I kind of am, but in the article Isakson lists four of the most common distortions, and I am certainly guilty on one of them. Polarize thinking is where, â€Å"you live in a universe where everything is either black-or-white, with no colors or shades of gray. You either look at yourself or others as perfect or as failures,† (Isakson). I very much do this with myself. I’m either in a state of bliss where I’m walking on sunshine, or I’m the scum of the Earth, I’m not worth the dead carcass you pass on the highway, and everyone rightly hates me. It’s idiotic and one day I hope to look back on myself and wonder why I ever thought like this. All in all, I think criticism should be kept inside of people’s heads. Think what you want to think, but keep it to yourself. Who are you to throw your opinion into someone’s vision? That mostly goes to people who aren’t professional critics. I think professional critics should have to read and re-read Alexander Pope’s An Essay on Criticism because I feel like it does have some good insight on how to be mindful of when you’re doing wrong. It’s sort of like The Prince for criticism. I feel like that book fits into most situations. As for people trying to create something out of a vision or dream they have, I think criticism should either be ignored or lightly acknowledged. Success shouldn’t be based on the opinions of the few, it should be measured by all the people that want something to do with whatever it is you’re making. There’s a quote I heard online once and I couldn’t find where it was originally said so I won’t be able to cite a source, but director Robert Rodriguez once said, â€Å"l think that everyone has at least a dozen or so bad movies in them; the sooner you get them out the better. † I relate this back to songs. I know I have a lot of bad songs in me, so I’m trying to get them out so I can get to the good stuff. The best part about that is the songs are good to me right now, they don’t become bad until I write something new. It blocked one of my ways to express my ideas. The first day I went to my fifth grade classroom, my teacher kept asking me if I wanted any snack, but I could not understand her no matter what she did. In the end, she had to call home and have my mom translate everything for me. I could not have the simplest conversation, much less write anything decent in English. How was I going to communicate with other people? How was I going to continue my passion for writing? I did not stop there. During the summer of my sophomore year I successfully finished writing my first book. I have written countless other stories and short novels in an effort to try to learn English, but this is my first big accomplishment. Initially I saw English as my enemy, but it eventually became my friend. Through writing practice and vocabulary memorization I was able to overcome the language issue, and show the world my imagination again. What was more, coming to America makes me learn more than just English. It showed me a variety of ideas from diverse people, and motivated me to create more art and writing. First, it set up what a ‘self-schema’ is and why it is important to the study, then it assessed nutrition diaries, and finally, evaluated the results.   The results have proven having a self-schema is a key point towards behavior. Students in this study who had a self-schema about healthy eating were likely to have a better diet.   Researchers found that those with a healthy eating schema consumed more fiber and less total and saturated fat, but found no significant different in cholesterol or sugar intake.   In general, those with a health eating schema had a healthier diet.   What this means is that the students’ beliefs significantly affected their behavior. This study does have its limitations.   The sample size was only 49 participants, all college-age, and all female.   The researchers have suggested that instead of a healthy-eating schema, what they have actually encountered was a dieting-schema. College-aged females are frequently concerned with weight.   Many are on their own for the first time, many are dating, and many are concerned about their appearance.   For this reason, the ‘healthy eating’ the researchers are seeing could be simply an attempt to control one’s weight and therefore, appearance. To get around this particular problem, researchers would have to repeat the study with a larger sample size that included males, and people of different ages.   It is impossible, from the data given, to say that it is exactly the healthy eating schema that is causing the behavior. Researchers did note, however, that there are no significant differences in BMI or total calorie intake, leading them to believe that dieting may not be the schema at work.   Unless many other variables were noted – such as intake of vitamins and minerals, and more – and these variables were noted over a longer period of time, it is impossible to say which schema is really at work.

And It wasn't all blacks that supported, there were whites down there too who helped In the sit-ins. We sat there for hours on edge Just walling for someone to service us, but they just stared. For a long time they Just watched us Like we were aliens. They didn't know whether to be confused or angry. After some time had past, they had soon called the cops.And to the officers surprise, they were out numbered by a lot. They had to call for back up just to start to get us out. We made sure we stood our ground and made sure we kept our composure. It had gotten really bad too. People were throwing drinks at us, food, and anything else that they thought would provoke us into reacting in a negative way. Within this context, it is possible for the stories that are produced within society to be a part of a broader form of social classification. Due to this, there is the construction of a particular set of meanings, which can only be understood within specific systems of classification. Genres in this sense become instruments of control.This is evident if one considers that genres â€Å"encode rules that constrain the†¦production and reception of meanings†¦communicated through a large number of meta-texts† (Hodge 27). These meta-texts become the basis for the production of knowledge. All knowledge is positioned as knowledge in itself and knowledge produced from an d within body. As soon as both forms of knowledge are connected to a knowing subject, the subject becomes ensnared to the poststructuralist dictum of the unity and independence of the self, which leads to the formation of the narratives of the self.Narratives then display the imprint of culture and its institutions on the individual’s sense of identity. Since self and language are mutually implicated in an interdependent system of symbolic behavior, the language that one uses for the creation of literary narratives dictates the creation of identities. The modern era thereby places the individual in a kind of political double bind as it coerces the individual to conform to normalizing and disciplinary forms of narrative construction evident in the â€Å"domestication of literature† (Suvin 373). Science fiction, however, as a genre eludes the monopolizing character of other genres.As a genre, it is at the intersection of various fields. It draws on the elements of popula r culture, science, and all types of social relations (James and Mendlesohn 1). This is evident if one considers that it employs a methodology and an approach, which enables the specification of a new set of values through the depiction of a radical form of reality. In this sense, science fiction is less of a genre if one is to conceive of a genre as specifying a particular text’s subject matter and approach to themes. As opposed to the other literary genres, science fiction cannot be expected to employ a specific set of elements and tropes.It may however be depicted as a form of ongoing discussion since the texts within the genre may be perceived as mutually referential due to their characteristic opposition towards a naturalistic and empiricistic conception of reality. Science fiction as a genre is thereby defined by its critical stance towards the normative depictions of reality. However, to state that this is the defining characteristic of the genre provides problems for the genre itself. This is evident if one considers that it leaves the genre open to other forms of literary texts with the aforementioned characteristics such as fantasy and myth.Contrary to this, science fiction stands in opposition to the aforementioned forms of literature. Science fiction is neither totalizing nor deterministic as it presents a predetermined conception of the conception and end of reality [myth]. Furthermore, it is neither based upon a conceptual scheme that posits the impossible as ordinary [fantasy]. James and Mendlesohn state, â€Å"the sense of wonder is the emotional heart of science fiction† (3). David Nye refers to this as the appreciation of the sublime evident in science fiction texts.Such a description further echoes Frederick Pohl’s description of science fiction as â€Å"a way of thinking about things† (qtd in Malzberg 38). Generally, this â€Å"way of thinking about things† may be†¦ All of these will show that the spo ntaneous and habitual orientation of attention is inimical to the maintenance of reality. Therefore, scientific fiction provides a reorientation of attention and a kind of ontological conversion, which affects the aesthetic, ethical, and political perceptions of the reality. This reorientation also affects the ontology of the world.
